The Coal Hard Truth Campaign

About the Campaign

Sponsored by Core Natural Resources, The COAL Hard Truth is a national awareness campaign dedicated to restoring appreciation for coal’s vital place in America’s energy and industrial future. By highlighting coal’s essential role in powering industries, supporting communities, and driving progress, The COAL Hard Truth aims to reshape the conversation around American energy and innovation with data, evidence, and honesty.

Why Coal Still Matters

Coal does more than power our world. It strengthens economies, supports industries, and forms the foundation of countless essential products. From steel and cement to advanced materials, coal continues to fuel innovation and growth. As wind and solar power struggle to become practical and the demands for electricity increase rapidly, coal is seeing a major comeback—proving once again that reliable, affordable energy remains indispensable to society’s progress. Coal improves our quality of life on a number of fronts.

  • Our National Security & Energy Independence
  • The Advancement of Human Rights & Reducing Global Poverty
  • Building a Renewable Energy Infrastructure Requires Coal & Other Fossil Fuels
  • The Creation of Thousands of Products

A New Narrative is Emerging.

The Immense Benefits of Coal

Since the 1600s, coal has been a building block of modern life. From essential materials including steel and cement to components of water filtration and fertilizers that provide clean water and food, and the electricity that reduces global poverty—all are produced with the assistance of coal—either for its carbon, as an upstream material, or as a source of heat in the manufacturing process.

Over the past several decades, governments have placed considerable focus on regulating and developing technologies to reduce emissions from power plants with industry participation and remarkable success. Additionally, advancements in carbon capture and storage are actively being developed to enable coal to continue to serve in its traditional role as a reliable source of dispatchable, baseload power, but with significantly reduced or even net-negative CO2 emissions.

The Future of Coal

Through our Innovations Group, Core Natural Resources is focused on promising R&D efforts and other opportunities within the coal value chain, such as the prospect of taking advantage of coal’s unique chemistry for use as a feedstock to innovate advanced materials. Coal is now being used in the research and development of high-performance materials for aerospace, military, battery storage, building materials, and other high-technology applications.

One thing seems certain: coal will continue to play an important role in powering industries and supporting innovation in the decades to come.
