Core Natural Resources owns and operates 11 mines, including 8 longwalls. Within our operating footprint, our High CV thermal and metallurgical coal offerings represent some of the highest-quality coals in the world. Our product portfolio encompasses Low-Vol, High-Vol A, High Vol-B, Crossover, High Calorific Value Thermal and PRB coals. Through ownership of two strategic export terminals on the US Eastern seaboard, Core is a leading exporter of carbon-based materials serving multiple emerging seaborne markets.
Coal Types
Metallurgical Coals
Core Natural Resources mines and markets a broad assortment of high-quality carbon-based products for industrial metallurgical applications, primarily steel production. We are committed to working with our customers to deliver exceptional value, creative solutions, consistent product quality and first-rate customer service. Through our 5 metallurgical mines, we offer an expansive product portfolio, with complementary qualities for blending capabilities.
We are the leading supplier of premium High-Vol A products globally through Leer and Leer South Longwall Mines. Additionally, Core offers High-Vol B products through the Mountain Laurel Mine. To complete our suite of metallurgical offerings, our Beckley and Itmann Mines produce premium Low-Vol coals.
Thermal Coals
Core also produces low-emitting thermal coals for sale to both domestic and international customers. We provide coal blending capabilities to suit each customer’s unique specifications and applications.
Most of our thermal coals are extracted from our Pennsylvania Mining Complex (PAMC), located in Greene and Washington counties in the southwest corner of the state. The PAMC is the largest underground coal mine complex in North America, consisting of our Bailey, Enlow Fork and Harvey mines, along with the central preparation plant and train loadout facility. It is among the safest and most productive complexes in the world.
Core is also a leading producer of sub-bituminous thermal coal through our Powder River Basin subsidiary in Wyoming, which operates the world-recognized Black Thunder mine. Core operations also supply high-quality thermal products to power generators and industrial customers from mines in Colorado and Illinois.
Our West Elk longwall mine near Somerset, CO produces approximately 3 million tons of thermal (11,400 Btu) coal every year.
High CV Thermal Coals
Core High CV thermal coals are some of the highest-quality products offered globally. The Pennsylvania Mining Complex (PAMC) is one of the largest, most efficient coal mining complexes in North America, offering a High CV thermal product that can be used in power generation, industrial applications or sold to the crossover metallurgical market to assist in steel production. The PAMC includes 5 longwalls at Bailey, Enlow Fork and Harvey feeding one centralized preparation plant. In addition to PAMC, the West Elk Mine utilizes longwall operations to produce High CV thermal coal in Colorado. Our High CV thermal coal provides blending capabilities to suit each customer’s unique specifications and applications in a multitude of industries.
PBR Coals
Core is a leading producer of sub-bituminous, Powder River Basin (PRB) thermal coal in Wyoming. Core operates the world-recognized Black Thunder Mine and also the Coal Creek Mine. The end-use of our PRB coals is the power generation market.

Steel & Construction
With a range of premium metallurgical carbon-based products, Core Natural Resources is an essential link in the world’s steel value chain. Our metallurgical coals are a critical ingredient for the construction of an increasingly vertical and high-speed society, both here in the United States and overseas.
By providing a range of coal qualities and blends, Core Natural Resources serves a more diverse customer base across multiple growth markets and geographies. For example, blast furnace steel constitutes 70% of the world’s steel output, and our metallurgical coal is a key input in the production of new steel from blast furnaces. This essential need is expected to remain in strong demand for decades to come, as steel will be required to support the world’s growing population, ongoing economic development, continued urbanization and even the build-out of a low-carbon economy.
Thermal Power Generation & Industrial Applications
Core’s high calorific value thermal coals continue to be increasingly sought after in a variety of industrial markets and end-use applications, including power generation, cement production and other industrial uses. In fact, thermal coal consumption and exports are expected to reach unprecedented levels in 2024, driven by rising demand in emerging markets.[1] From a long-range perspective, the overall use of coal around the world has increased by roughly 55% over the last two decades.[2]
Today, electrification, AI and the growing demand for data centers is driving an enormous need for increased power generation.
